Chemical vs Physical Exfoliation 🤔 what’s actually better for your skin?
Not all exfoliation is created equal.
One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that exfoliation has to feel rough or aggressive to “work.”
In reality, over-exfoliating or using harsh scrubs can create inflammation, sensitivity, and barrier damage over time.
Here’s the difference:
✨ Physical Exfoliation
Uses manual friction to remove dead skin cells.
Examples:
• Scrubs
• Brushes
• Facial tools
• Micro-polishes
Physical exfoliation can help smooth texture instantly, but if it’s too harsh or used too often, it can create micro-irritation especially for sensitive or acne-prone skin.
✨ Chemical Exfoliation
Uses ingredients like lactic acid, glycolic acid, enzymes, or fruit acids to dissolve dead skin buildup more evenly.
Benefits can include:
✔ Smoother texture
✔ Brighter skin
✔ Improved hydration
✔ Better product penetration
✔ Less aggressive exfoliation when formulated correctly
This is why I personally lean toward controlled chemical exfoliation and barrier-first peel systems like the MeauxCo PhytaPeels.
The goal should never be to “attack” the skin.
The goal is controlled correction while keeping the skin healthy and supported.
Some skin types may benefit from both, but more exfoliation does NOT equal better results.
Healthy skin should feel:
Balanced
Calm
Smooth
Hydrated
not raw and overprocessed.
✨ Exfoliation should refine the skin, not punish it.

Love this!!! Insightful!! After I started Esthetician school I stopped the physical exfoliation and when I started using MeauxCo I used the chemical and I immediately noticed a difference in my skin!!! …..my Name is Cathy and I was an over exfoliator 🤦♀️
