What even is purging? Is it a thing?


Per Nolla Health- The term "purging" is actually a colloquial term the clinical term is "Acne Flare" which is common is those using retinoids and tretinoin - some AHAs and BHAs can cause this as well some studies show - but some reserach suggest less than 5% of clients to another stating 20% of people who use retinoids experince a Flare or Purge - here is the explaination - " Skin purging occurs when certain skincare ingredients speed up your skin's natural cell turnover process. Normally, your skin replaces itself about every 28 days. Active ingredients like retinoids accelerate this cycle, pushing out dead skin cells, oil, and debris trapped beneath the surface. This brings existing clogged pores to the surface faster, causing a temporary increase in breakouts.

Research shows that about 20-25% of people experience purging when starting acne treatments. It's not a sign that the product is wrong…

And secondly - I just read a post from an esthetician about the term "purging". That purging doesn't actually occur and what you are experiencing is a reaction caused by using the wrong ingredients or products that aren't matched to your skin. That the term "purge" is a marketing excuse that dismisses clients instead of educating them with the knowledge they deserve. I'm just curious if this is a term you use after specific treatments or if you simply say a breakout could occur. This fellow esti feels as though this term "excuses the issue and never fixes the problem." I don't feel that I have personally ever used "purge" to dismiss an issue. Definitely been using this term wrong! I was taught that purging in normal especially after microneedles an dermaplaning. I learn something new from you everyday sash so thank you!!
